Windsurfing: Rattray Bay, Aberdeenshire Wind Direction: S Wind Stength: 16-22mph Surf / Sea State: Flat, 2 ft swell Air Temperature: Warm Sea Temperature: Warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Got the call from Rob that we should give Rattray Bay a look, as the
forecast looked kind of promising. Plenty of wind at Newburgh (about 15 -
20 miles south of St Fergus), but when we arrived a little after low tide,
there was not a lot of wind and the water was flat as a pancake. The
forecast had suggested the wind would swing round from a SW to a SE, and
the wind strength to increase. We could see whitecaps starting to form out
to sea, and hoped that if the wind changed round a bit as predicted, we
would get some of the wind coming through. After about 45 minutes, we were
on! We had already rigged our 6.3m sails and got our big boards ready
(Syncro 115 in my case and JP Xcite Ride 120 in Rob's case), so went
straight out. I managed to get planing a little earlier than Rob,
initially, but the wind did increase a little so that most of the time we
were planing with no bother at all and without having to pump too much.
Some small 2-3 foot swell a few hundred metres off shore which occasionally
ramped up enough to get some airtime. The waves did pick up a little bit,
but only close in shore and not really any good for more than a couple of
small turns, although if there was a gust, I did manage to get a couple of
decent jumps off them on the way out. Really enjoyed myself - best sail
I've had here, and a knot or two more wind and a little bit more swell
would have made it an absolutely fantastic session. I've still given it a
five star rating though - mainly because the weather was fantastic as well
as the pretty good sailing conditions.
